What started as a residence on the 2nd Floor in Oxford Street’s Topshop in 2014 has turned into a range of grooming staples for Johnny’s Chop Shop. So we tested out the brand’s No1 Matt Hair Paste to see how it fared.
The first thing you’ll notice about the No1 Matt Hair Paste is the texture of the product. Though described as a paste, we’d say it’s probably more of a cream. However, that’s not a criticism. It’s lightweight and extremely easy to use through palms. The scent is also perfectly masculine, evoking thoughts of old school barbershops.
Thanks to its creaminess, No1 is initially extremely easy to work through your hair and does create some real definition quickly. The problem being it dries probably too quickly, meaning you need to be swift when crafting your desired look. That said, the matte finish is immaculate and there’s absolutely zero grease. It also adds some volume to lacklustre hair.
Johnny’s Chop Shop No1 Matt Hair Paste is billed as a strong holding hair product. But we’d describe it more as a medium hold. We’d argue it’s more reworkable than branded. The hold also does suffer if your haircut is anything other than short. As such, reapplication may be needed later on in the day on medium hair and using it with a hairspray may also be a good idea if you who want some added strength.
