With everybody becoming more conscious of sustainability and the importance of nourishing our bodies with natural ingredients, the word ‘natural’ has entered cosmetic vocabulary more and more over the past decade. But you may not know that you only need to have less than 1% natural or organic ingredients in the formulation to call a product to be described as ‘natural’. So we thought we give our readers a breakdown of some of our favourite men’s grooming brands on the market who focus on natural ingredients, sustainability and/or recyclable packaging.
One of the more household names on our list, Neal’s Yard Remedies have been at the forefront of natural skincare in the UK for over 30 years now. And for good reason. Though packaging is kept to a minimum, Neal’s Yard’s blue plastic bottles are made from 100% recycled material, while their glass receptacles are also completely recyclable. Their NYR Men range maybe relatively compact but it features all the stalwarts you’ll need for a morning routine. The Cooling Aftershave Balm, for example, is a staple in our cabinet.
Having been selling their range of vibrant and lush grooming essentials since 2015, Maapilim are one of the newer brands on our list. Hailing from Tel Aviv, Israel, all of their products are created ‘on the balmy coast of the Great Sea’ and are inspired by the city’s electric energy. Using ingredients like jojoba oil from Israel, Argan oil from Morocco, lavender oil from France, rosemary oil from Italy, and carrot seed oil from Egypt, the brand’s line of men’s grooming products is extensive with everything from body washes and shampoo, to hand creams and beard oils on offer.
Brickell Men’s Products was created in 2014 when co-founder Josh Meyer couldn’t find high-end, all-natural products made specifically for men. So, he decided to make his own. Now Brickell combine organic, high quality natural ingredients with advanced science to formulate some of the best men’s skin care and grooming products around. All products are cruelty free and cater for the face, body, hair, shaving, beard care, anti-aging, and more.
One of the more widely available brands in the UK, Bulldog Skincare were actually the first men’s grooming brand to be recognised and approved by the BUAV (now ‘Cruelty Free International’) under their Humane Cosmetics Standard, and they’re now a major player in the industry. Designed from the ground up with male skin as their focus, Bulldog Skincare products work simply and effectively while targeting specific issues and areas on men’s skin. None of the products in the range are tested on animals and they don’t contain any ingredients derived from animal sources either. They’re also free from chemical no-no’s like parabens, synthetic fragrances and artificial colours.
One of the leading names in natural skincare, Green People are also one of the most decorated, with more awards than Meryl Streep. Natural ingredients play a key role in the brand’s success with sulphates and parabens replaced by the likes of organic essential oils. The brand was created when founder Charlotte Vøhtz’s daughter was battling multiple skin allergies and eczema. She found that many so-called natural skincare brands used almost entirely synthetic ingredients and thus Green People was born. Now they stock everything from Styling Gels to Beard Oils for men.
REN Clean Skincare may have some of the most attractive packaging around but the UK brand also cares about nature too. As well as working toward a waste-free future by using 100% recyclable packaging reclaimed ocean plastic, they also use 100% plant- or mineral-derived ingredients. Its entire range is also free from toxins, harsh chemicals, and potential irritants. They’re also a great option for vegans. Alongside staples like Moisturisers and Body Washes, they also offer Suncream and Sleeping Pillow Sprays.
Finally, British start-up ManCave were launched in 2012 with a key focus on bringing a fresh and inspiring regime of grooming essentials developed and formulated from natural ingredients. Using the best that Nature and Science has to provide, ManCave’s products are paraben- and sulphate-free, and both the tubes’ cap and main body are formed in a single material (PP), meaning that the finished products are 100% recyclable and BPA compliant.
